Amicus is a solid product that can help firms manage their operations more effectively. It’s very important though to hire a consultant to get the most benefit through correct set up. This is the best way to ensure Amicus is customized the way the firm actually practices and to institute best practices. Some of the most valuable features include the Calendar allowing attorneys and staff to track appointments and court dates, effective implementation of document assembly because it can reduce the time it takes a lawyer to produce documents from 2-3 hours to 2-3 minutes. Amicus needs to make some of the existing features work properly, e.g. custom records - customers should evaluate their requirements carefully to ensure the software can accommodate them. Email integration with Outlook and other email packages don’t work as well as they could. John Heckman, Heckman Consulting
I would recommend Amicus without hesitation, it provides significant operational benefit, is easy to learn and use and I rarely experienced problems with the software. One important consideration is to have a good enough computer infrastructure (hardware) to handle the software, because it takes a lot of resources including a dedicated server with plenty of RAM, dedicated (fast) processor, etc. Also, the reality is you need to use an independent consultant if you have any technical support needs. Amicus’ tech support was terrible in every way: response time, the way they handled issues. A couple of times they made things worse rather than fixing them. Once we began using a consultant, our experience improved considerably.
There are 2 different versions, one for large firms and one for small firms. The small firms would like to see some "large firm" elements in their version. In an ideal world, Amicus would add a totally integrated accounting module, Amicus keeps track of time, but then you need to send it to an accounting package. Amicus Accounting is a little complicated and as an add-on it’s not totally seamless. Firms should work with a certified consultant and/or talk to another firm that uses the same product. Or read reviews on LegalRelay so they know what they're getting into. I work with a lot of firms who go to Gavel and Gown's web site, and say “hey this looks easy…” and buy it, and end up spending thousands of dollars, time and aggravation. They'd be much better off speaking to a user first who can tell them, e.g. "It doesn’t do THIS perfectly", or "Make sure you set this up THIS way." On the other hand, using a consultant for both implementation and training, you can get everything set up specifically to your firm’s requirements and you’ll get tremendous benefit from Amicus.
